GREEN GALALITH FIERCE FISH BUCKLE

A wonderful fish buckle in a streaky green galaltih (an early plastic).  This buckle is from the Art Deco period.  A length of material/leather/suede would have been sewn on the back of the buckle.  This was, of course, the days of the dressmaker or home made dresses.  Buttons and buckles would have been chosen for the dress or jacket.   It is quite easy to make this back into a belt (Look on my web site - www.gillianhorsup.com - for a picture of the back of the belt and the size etc.)  Price £75 Ref: 2295 B88/45.  I always have a selection of buckles and buttons at my shop at Grays Antiques - in central London - near Bond Street Tube Station.

CREAM & BLACK CELLULOID HAIR COMB

On a recent buying trip I was lucky enough to be able to buy several vintage hair combs.  This one looks Art Nouveau - with its leave and flowers.  It is made of cream coloured celluloid ( a plastic - popular from circa 1880 - 1930 - so it predates bakelite).  Celluloid moves a little - which bakelite does not.  It has flowing leaves/flowers that are coloured black.  I always have a selection of celluloid hair combs amongst my vintage costume jewellery and accessories at Vintage Modes, @Grays Antiques, in central London.  Ref: 2086 B98/26 Price £85.  See me on Facebook and Twitter - Gillian Horsup Vintage Jewellery.  On Facebook I try to blog regularly about vintage costume jewellery and accessories.

BLACK GLASS PAINTED STONES 'UP THE EARS' CLIP EARRINGS

A gorgeous pair of vintage black glass stones earrings that go up the ears.  These would be from the 1950's.  The black glass stones have added painted decoration.  There are also 4 carnival glass stones on each earring.  They measure approx 1 3/4 inches.  So good to get a pair in excellent condition.  I always carry a large stock of vintage clip earrings in my shop at Vintage Modes, Grays Antiques - so many more than I can photograph and put on my web site - www.gillianhorsup.com so - if you can get in to see - there will be far more choice!  Full description of this pair on the website - ref: 2276 B93/8

CELLULOID SHIP BROOCH

This is just amazing! It is a ?celluloid ship brooch and it is a whopping 3 1/2 inches across! It is in such good condition for an Art Deco brooch. See full description on my web site. Ref: 2172 B89/34 Price £85 (where would you find another one!). I am at Grays Antiques in central London - so easy to get to - next to Bond Street tube station. Look on my web site - here's the link - www.gillianhorsup.com

SWIZZLE STICK MARKED 'SILVER'

Swizzle sticks were used to stir drinks - either to take out some bubbles - or to froth up the drink.  A man would take one out of his pocket and gallantly stir the lady's drink if she did not like to many bubbles!  I just love the beautiful shape of a swizzle stick!  Would look good in an Art Deco bar.  Think Noel Coward!  This one is marked 'silver' but I cannot sell it as Sterling as it does not have a hallmark.  You open it by sliding the bar next to the 'silver' mark - and then shut it to put it in a pocket.  Ref: 2272 B99/1 Price 68.  www.gillianhorsup.com - just one of the interesting items I have in my shop at Grays Antiques in central London.  Please visit for a good selection of vintage costume jewellery, compacts, bags and other items - including some for the bar!

VINTAGE COMPACT - MAN IN RED JACKET & CREAM TROUSERS

This amazing compact is probably 1930-1940's.  It depicts a man dressed in a black hat, red jacket, cream trousers and black shoes.  It takes loose powder and has a sifter and puff.  For a full description look on my web site - www.gillianhorsup.com - and look at the pictures of the back and inside.  I love powder compacts and always have a selection in my shop at Grays Antiques in central London.  I am in the Mews - which is a separate building from the main Grays.  Look for me at Vintage Modes downstairs.

VINTAGE METAL CHAIN BRACELET WITH 5 BAKELITE HANGINGS

A wonderful chain bracelet with 5 colourful pieces of bakelite hanging.  These are in red, black, brown and two different greens.  The bracelet is quite long - at approx 9 inches - but the links are not soldered so it could be made shorter.  It is very yummy and I would be happy to keep it!  This is just one of many bracelets I have in my shop at Vintage Modes, in Grays Antiques - next to Bond Street Tube Station in central London.  The bracelet is £88 and the reference is 2267 B97/15.  I only manage to get a small proportion of my pieces onto my web site - but do take a look - www.gillianhorsup.com - and you will also find me on the Grays Antiques web site, Facebook (Gillian Horsup Vintage Jewellery) Twitter and Pinterest.

ART DECO 'CARVED GLASS'FLOWERS NECKLACE

This delicate necklace is made up of 3 panels of 'carved glass' flowers.  These are not, of course, carved glass - but have been moulded to look like carved pieces of real stones - copying the work of Jewellers such as Cartier.  It is on a fine, white metal, chain.  It has open backed glass stones in between. It is amazing that it has survived for about 80 years undamaged!  It is currently in my shop at Vintage Modes, Grays Antiques - very near Bond Street tube station in central London.  I have a good selection of vintage jewellery and vintage costume jewellery in my shop and am always adding new stock.  I love Art Deco and always try to have a selection of interesting pieces - brooches, dress clips, necklaces, earrings - and also a variety of small collectibles - such as compacts, hair combs, powder boxes etc.  The necklace is £128 and the reference is 2255 B88/5 - further details on my web site - www.gillianhorsup.com

CAROL MATHER SILVER STAG BROOCH

This is a Carol Mather silver stag brooch - hallmarked London 2004.  It does not appear to be on her current website - so I presume she is not making it at present.  Carol shows a love of wildlife and great attention to detail in her work - which has been exhibited worldwide.  The stag is silver with gold coloured antlers and collar.  His eye is black.  It has a safety chain with her distinctive stud.  It is hallmarked on the back.  (See my web site - www.gillianhorsup.com for a picture of the back and further details - size etc.).  This is definitely a brooch for an animal lover!  Price £120 Ref: 2253 B91/47

CZECH HORNET BROOCH - YELLOW BLACK & WHITE GLASS STONES

ART DECO, RED GLASS, DRESS CLIP WITH SILVER DECORATION

I love dress clips - they can be used in so many different ways!  This one is made of red glass - with silvered glass decoration.  It is not a big one - but it is very stylish!  In addition to wearing it as a dress clip, it could be hung on a silver chain.  I always have a good selection of dress clips in my shop at Vintage Modes, Grays Antiques.  Grays Mews (where I am - and there are two separate buildings) is so easy to get to - being opposite the side entrance of Bond Street tube station in central London.  I also have a large selection of Art Deco costume jewellery.  Price £30.  Reference 2243 B96/38 - www.gillianhorsup.com

MODERNIST SILVER BRACELET

This is a modernist bracelet from Germany.  It is not Sterling silver - it is marked 830 - which is a little lower silver content than Sterling.  It is probably from the 1950's-1960's and is old, unused stock - which is why it is in such good condition.  I cannot sell it as silver as it is not Sterling or Hallmarked - but it is still a superb bracelet - very much a piece of its time.  See full details on my web site - www.gillianhorsup.com - reference 2239 B96/15.  Price £145.  I sell vintage jewellery and costume jewellery at Grays Antiques in central London - do pay me a visit!

MICRO PETIT POINT SMALL BAG WITH JADE CLASP

Today I have been thinking about petit point. I have just bought this wonderful micro petit point bag with a carved jade clasp (see full description on my website). CZECH CHINESE STYLE 1930'S BROOCH

A Czech brooch in the Chinese style from around 1930 - probably made by Neiger. The Chinese style was very popular at this time - along with the Egyptian Revival style. Brooches, necklaces, earrings and bracelets were made in these styles in brass and glass - to immitate jade, coral etc. These pieces are now very collectible and I don't get them very often. Ref: 2128 B85/32. Price £88. A brooch in the Egyptian style went on Ebay recently for nearly £200. I always put these pieces on the web site so do watch! connect to my web site here Do visit my shop at Grays Antiques if you can.

CLEEVIS SUN SPECTACLES

Here's a pair of really whacky sun specs. The firm that made them went into administration in 1939 so they must pre date that! They have no glass - just slits in the black plastic lenses. They would have been influenced by the Eskimos - who used this idea to protet from the glare of the sun. They are made of celluloid - to look like tortoishell. Price £88. Ref: 2127 B84/38. See full description on my web site and see me on Facebook - Gillian Horsup Vintage Jewellery.Do visit my shop at Grays Antiques - near Bond Street. GLASS FLOWERS VINTAGE BLUE NECKLACE

This wonderful glass flowers necklace is probably Czech - made in the Art Deco period. As I can't find these necklaces documented anywhere I can only guess. It is rather wonderful. The blue in the picture is not quite accurate - it is more the muted colour of bluebells. Each glass flower bead has a brass wire embedded in the glass. This forms a loop to thread the beads on. I have never had one with so many beads on it. Price £120. Ref: 2114 B71/14. If you get an opportunity to visit my shop at Grays Antiques in central London, I would love to see you. LEA STEIN CICADA BROOCH- RED & BLACK

I love this red and black cicada brooch by Lea Stein! I do wear the cicada brooch - sometimes I wear a pair! This is in very strong colours - red and black for the head and black and white for the wings. These are edge in black and red. On the cicada you can easily see the layers of cellulose acetate in different colours that are bonded together to make the stripes. I also counted at least 6 different pieces that had to be put together - in addition to the clasp (which is marked with Lea Stein's name and Paris). The cicada is one of the bigger Lea Stein brooches. Full details on my web site - www.gillianhorsup.com - click here for my website Price £55. Ref: 2113 B77/30. My shop is at Grays Antiques in central London.

CELLULOID HAIR COMB- - RED & BLACK VINTAGE

A vintage celluloid hair comb. This is quite different from the normal faux tortoishell hair comb - or indeed the Art Deco hair combs with the coloured paste stones. It is a red comb overlaid with black. It has the straight lines of the Art Deco period and the wavy floral lines of the Art Nouveau. The red shows round the edge of the black. The back is entirely red. A great design! Price £75. Ref: 2112 B83/47. www.gillianhorsup.com for more details and my other stock. my website is here What I have on my web site is a very small proportion of the stock in my shop at Grays Antique (The Mews) in central London.

THE JEWELLERY I COLLECT!

People often ask me if I collect any special items of jewellery. Well yes and no! I like to have an example of things that interest me - often keeping pieces that might have a damage. I like to see how things are made. It is very useful to have these examples so you know what something should look like! Sometimes I wear a piece a couple of times and can then part with it - or even just keep it for a few weeks - then put it into the shop. I love bakelite bangles and do have and wear some of these - I just love the feel of them! I do have a small collection of Czech brooches - probably made by Neiger in the 1920/30's. They are in the Egyptian Revival style and are made of glass and brass (to immitate jade, coral etc.) These are now very difficult to find so I am very glad that I have kept some! There are also Oriental examples of these brooches - and I am quite happy to sell these! The picture is of one of my pieces and I am afraid it is not for sale! However I have some examples of Egyptian Revival in the shop - and on the web site - my website is here - do take a look. You can also see me on Facebook and Twitter.

RINGS - ONE OF MY FAVOURITE PIECES OF JEWELLERY!

I love rings and usually have plenty in the shop. I do not sell precious jewellery so these are usually silver or some sort of plastic. I am very fond of bakelite, celluloid, lucite and more modern plastics. I also like 20th century silver rings. Some of the Czech rings with glass stones are particularly beautiful and I always buy them when I can. I do not sell engagement or weddings rings. These are usually gold, platinum and gem stones. Sometimes I sell a token engagement ring - when a young man wants to give a ring as a promise to buy something better together!

For anyone wanting an engagement or wedding ring in the traditional style - this can be bought at Grays Antiques - where I have my shop. For anyone wanting a modern design - can I recommend Atelier - who have a shop in Newark. They have a beautiful selection - and will also make to order - you can even design your own! See their website - their website is here - do take a look!

TATLER APRIL 2012

Have some jewellery in this month's Tatler. The big thing at the moment is pastels and small floral clip earrings - which a lot of the magazines are borrowing from me. So - if you want to be up to date - do come to Grays to see the selection of vintage jewellery that we have there! This pair of small, plastic, turquise flowers clips earrings are £15 - a bargain! see 'Sense of Occasion' styled by Anna Bromilow and photographed by Luis Monteiro.

PAVONE FISH IN A BOWL BROOCH

This Pavone brooch of a fish in a bowl has a wonderful sense of humour.  Pavone makes jewellery out of old pieces of galalith - but I have not seen many pieces like this!  I am Pisces so love all fish jewellery.  Full description on my web site - http://www.gillianhorsup.com/ - also check out my notes on Pavone under 'Manufacturers'.  Ref: B70/39 price £68.  I always have a good selection of brooches at my shop in Vintage Modes, Grays Antiques - near Bond Street tube station in central London.

LEA STEON BROOCH - RED & BLACK CICADA

This is a red and black cicada brooch by Lea Stein Paris. (All my Lea Stein have the correct markings on the back). The cicada is my favourite out of all the Lea Stein designs. This one looks very Art Deco in its red and black colourings. The cicada is one of the bigger Lea Stein brooches - being nearly 3 1/2 inches long. It has no glitter - for those who are not keen on it! Ref: 2037 B73/35. Price £55. See my web site - www.gillianhorsup.com and my Facebook page - Gillian Horsup Vintage Jewellery - or come to my shop at Grays Antiques, near Bond Street Tube Station in central London!
