SILVER VINTAGE BALLERINA BROOCH - DESIGNED BY FREDERICK MASSINGHAM FOR RETAILER D.H.PHILLIPS 1947

This is one of the famous silver ballerina brooches designed by Frederick Massingham for the retailers D. H. Phillips. It is a registered design no. 8851564. Massingham did a number of different designs - larger, smaller and in pairs. Some brooches and some earrings. This one has the Birmingham Hallmark for 1947. (They range from 1947-1949.)  I am sure it is not a coincidence that the film The Red Shoes - starring Moira Shearer - was the 6th most popular movie in the U.K. in 1948. A clever piece of marketing! I also have 3 more of the brooches but have not had time to photograph them!  Ref: 3076 C69/39

ORANGE GALALITH VINTAGE BEADS WITH CUT, CLEAR, FACETED DECO PERIOD GLASS BEADS

This is a long row of beads and has orange galalith beads and clear glass faceted beads.  It was put together in a shop in Spain that closed in 1972.  It is a very interesting combination of beads - one that I would not have thought of - but I love it!  There are a number of different designs of the galalith beads and the clear beads have unusual facets.  Ref: 3074 YL Price £95

LEA STEIN BROOCH - GOLDEN AND BLACK OWL

I just love the delicious colours of this Lea Stein owl brooch.  I am very fussy about my colour combinations - as my customers know!  I just look at this one and wonder how it is made!  Very pleased to report too that all the dreadful copies of Lea Stein brooches have been cleared from Amazon.  (What were they thinking of!). This is a 1970s gold plated 8 strand chains necklace.  The quality and condition are excellent.  I love Monet and Napier vintage gold plated jewellery.  To produce such high quality plating would be very expensive now.  Of course at the time people like Dior were also producing good quality plating but Monet and Napier were more affordable.  Full details on my web site with measurements.  Ref: 3063 C67/14 Price £88

CZECH GREEN GLASS VINTAGE CICADA EARRINGS - LEVER BACK FITTING

This Czech green glass cicada earrings came out of a shop that shut in 1972.  The shop was opened around 1900.  The then owner used to go to Gablonz to buy jewellery/findings.  According to the family member I am buying the jewellery from, this man was her grandfather and he knew the Neiger brothers and was able to speak the language.  His daughter took over the shop and jewellery was made using the old components bought by the grandfather.  (Apparently the Neiger brothers used to let him have components they no longer wanted).  In 1972 the shop was shut - due to family problems - and the contents stayed in place until the daughter died recently.  I have a large quantity of stock which I am sorting through.  The glues and threads on a lot of pieces have deteriated and will need to be replaced.  Although it is fun sorting through everything that I have bought so far - there is such a lot of work to be done I don't know how I will get through it all.  Luckily this pair of earrings did not need any attention!  Ref: 3057 YL8 Price £65

LEA STEIN JEWELLERY - COPIES AND FAKES

I have loved Lea Stein jewellery for many many years.  She and her husband started in the late 1960s making buttons etc.  Her jewellery has - over the years, attracted so many followers.  The Fox has become iconic!  However unfortunately there are so many cheap copies and fakes coming - presumably from the Far East.  I do not think it is acceptable to sell these cheap imitations - especially as they are copyrighted.    Swamping the market with cheap copies often puts companies out of business.  Please do not buy them - even if the price is tempting - it really is not fair!  I am currently doing battle with Amazon - as they have a range of Lea Stein copies at the moment.  Easy to find in Brooches.  If you love Lea Stein please add a review - Amazon do not like a 'hate' review - and please explain why!  The people buying them might love them - but they seem quite unaware that they are copies of someone else's lifetime's
work.

LEA STEIN BROOCH - THE TREE - GOLDEN BROWNS & EMERALD GREEN

Lea Stein fakes/copies are everywhere - and have recently been on Amazon - please do not buy them.  Lea Stein has spend her life building her company and designing her jewellery - and it is copyrighted.  This wonderful tree brooch is one of the more difficult ones to get and I love it!  It does, of course, have the right markings on the back of the pin - Lea Stein Paris.  This helps to identify a genuine Lea Stein - although I understand some fakes are appearing with this marking.  If you take a good look at the copies, though, you will be able to tell the genuine from the fake.  The amount of work in a Lea Stein brooch - which is often made of lots of layers/parts/patterns/inserts - is very different from the one layered plastic fakes. This tree has so many different textures.  It is made up of 8 different pieces of cellulose acetate.  4 different colours on the front and 3 on the back.  Each different colour has to be joined/attached to the others.    Such a lot of work!  This one is £65 reference 3053 C65/12

LEA STEIN BROOCH - THE PENGUIN - BLACK, MOP & GREEN

This is the Lea Stein penguin brooch.  It is a genuine Lea Stein - not a cheap Chinese import copy.  Lea Stein has been designing since the late 1960s and built up a business that has followers world wide.  Her designs are brilliant. Unfortunately there are companies who cannot be bothered to design pieces themselves and copy other people's work in cheap plastics.  As these are very cheap people buy them without a thought for the effect this has on the people whose designs are copied.  So many companies have gone out of business because of cheap import copies of their work.  I do not want this to happen to Lea Stein - so I urge people not to buy the copies!  Usually you can tell it is a copy because it does not have the Lea Stein Paris logo on the back of the pin.  However I understand some have been seen with this on them.  If you put a genuine Lea Stein next to a copy there is just no comparison!  Anyway love this penguin - and he is the real deal!  ref: 3052 C65/8  Price £65

1960s SUNGLASSES - BROWN FRAME WITH GREEN GLASS LENSES

I have been lucky to find some 1960s unused vintage sunglasses.  This pair has a round brown frame with green glass lenses.  I love vintage sunglasses and always have a selection in the shop but find it hard to find unused early ones.  These would be better tried on in my shop at Vintage Modes in Grays Antiques in central London.  Of course - as they are about 50 years old I cannot guarantee them for protection from the sun.  Nor would it be easy to put in prescription lenses - as glass ones are tricky to remove from the plastic frame.  The green lenses are an even colour - in the photos the colour is affected by the lights.  Price £75 ref: 3045 C61/9

This very large - about 4 inches across - vintage compact has a fabric top and bottom.  I do not know who made it - it is only marked 'Germany'.  It has a lipstick container and a faux tortoiseshell comb.  It has obviously not been used.  I wonder where it has been all these years - in a drawer somewhere I presume - as the fabric is still in good condition.  Not a compact for a handbag - it would soon be worn - but to be displayed somewhere safe and enjoyed for years yet.  Price £125 ref: 3044 C61/14

ART DECO BLACK & SILVER GLASS BELT BUCKLE

In the Art Deco period a lot of clothes were made by a dress maker - or at home.  Buttons, belt buckles and other trimmings would be bought to go with the material of the outfit.  This Art Deco belt buckles would have been used to make a belt for a dress.  It is in black and silver glass.  It has 4 metal rings on the back to sew on to the belt.  It is in good condition considering its age!  Full details are on my web site - www.gillianhorsup.com - I usually have a selection of belt buckles of different periods in my shop at Grays Antiques.  Ref: 3040 C53/22

CELLULOID NEEDLE CASE, THIMBLE & BOBBIN HOLDER - RED & CREAM MAN

Love this - it is an Art Deco period, celluloid needle case/bobbin holder/thimble in the shape of a red man.  Everything you need to make an emergency sewing repair - sew on a button etc. - in a wonderful humorous case.  The thimble comes off the top. The middle unscrews to reveal a bobbin for cottons.  This unscrews to hold a couple of needles.  He has lost a little paint but is otherwise in good condition.  Price £68 ref: 3030 C58/4

LEA STEIN BROOCH - JOSEPHINE BAKER

This is one of Lea Stein's newer designs - the Josephine Baker brooch.  This one has the brow face.  There is a version with a lighter face that is called 'Lido'.  I think it has been complicated to design and make.  The face has wonderful detail (and was difficult to photograph without getting shading on the face!).  The earrings are stunning.  Unfortunately it has to be that bit more expensive - because it cost me more!  Full details on the web site.  Price £95 ref: 3028 C59/3

LEA STEIN BROOCH - THE EDELWEISS IN RED GREEN BLACK & MOP

This edelweiss brooch was designed by Lea Stein somewhere between 1968 and 1980 (according to the Lea Stein Jewellery book.)  Of course so many of her designs have been reproduced over the years.  Do watch out for the copies/fakes being made in China - they may be cheaper but they are not so nice!  The designs that are being copied are the more popular one - cats, dogs etc.  I does make me angry that Ms. Stein has spent a lifetime building up her business - and is still active at 80 years - and people think it O.K. to make cheap copies.  Why can't they design their own jewellery!  Price £65 ref: 3024 C56/6

CZECH DECO PERIOD SHORT NECKLACE WITH 7 GREEN GLASS DROPS

I do have a passion for vintage Czech glass jewellery and love the necklace in that Deco green glass colour that was so popular.  This necklace is quite short at 16 inches and has deco green glass beads, emerald green glass stones and 7 pear shaped drops hanging.  Rare to get all the drops without any damage.  The gilt metalwork has aged and acquired a lovely (in my opinion) patina. Would be quite happy to keep this myself - but needs must!  Ref: 3021 C49/43

LARGE MARCASITE STUD EARRINGS WITH BROWN/GLASS/CARNELIAN PIECES

Love these - they are just my colour!  Going to have to make myself take them into Grays Antiques!  They are on white metal - marked 925 - with marcasite stones and large, brown stones that could be carnelians but equally could be glass - it is difficult to tell.  I don't mind either way and would wear them quite happily!  I am not sure of date either.  A lot of marcasite jewellery was imported some years ago from the Far East but this supply seems to have dried up.  They are about 2 1/2 inches deep and priced at £88.  Ref: 3020 C57/39

FILIGREE VINTAGE BROOCH - WHITE METAL AND RED GLASS STONES

I do love filigree brooches - many of them made in Czech.  Personally the bigger the better - but I know this is not everyone's taste.  This is much smaller - about a 1 1/2 inches square.  It has red glass faceted stones and is set on a white metal base. This has small leaves and a diamond pattern

- but what I really love about these brooches is that the back is often as beautiful as the front - do take a look!  Can be worn square or on the diagonal.  Filigree Vintage Brooch - White Metal and Red Glass Stones Full details on web site.  Price £55 ref: 3018
