Today I have been thinking about petit point. I have just bought this wonderful micro petit point bag with a carved jade clasp (see full description on my website). It got me thinking about how these were made. I measured the number of stiches per inch and was amazed to find it was about 40. (That is 1600 per square inch!). Can you image what this did to your eyes! How many hours did it take? (And why - just why did they do it!). There is even something called micro petit point - with even more stitches to the inch! Ref: 2140 B52/27. Price £140. See me in Grays Antiques in central London (in Grays Mews - not the main building). Photos, maps and more details on - here's my web site

These large, vintage, gilt hoop earrings have been borrowed by lots of magazines for photoshoots! You can see them in Twenty6 Magazine Issue E photographed by Louise Samuelsen and styled by Rathel Bakewell. It is hard to find large, good quality, gilt hoop earrings - and ever since Vogue featured some of mine in a photoshoot I have been watching out for good examples. This pair are £58 and the reference number is 933 B53/2. You will see them on my web site click here and they are listed under 'vintage earrings'. A Czech brooch in the Chinese style from around 1930 - probably made by Neiger. The Chinese style was very popular at this time - along with the Egyptian Revival style. Brooches, necklaces, earrings and bracelets were made in these styles in brass and glass - to immitate jade, coral etc. These pieces are now very collectible and I don't get them very often. Ref: 2128 B85/32. Price £88. A brooch in the Egyptian style went on Ebay recently for nearly £200. I always put these pieces on the web site so do watch! connect to my web site here Do visit my shop at Grays Antiques if you can.

Here's a pair of really whacky sun specs. The firm that made them went into administration in 1939 so they must pre date that! They have no glass - just slits in the black plastic lenses. They would have been influenced by the Eskimos - who used this idea to protet from the glare of the sun. They are made of celluloid - to look like tortoishell. Price £88. Ref: 2127 B84/38. See full description on my web site and see me on Facebook - Gillian Horsup Vintage Jewellery.Do visit my shop at Grays Antiques - near Bond Street. I love dress clips - they are so versatile! You can either wear them as a dress clip or hang them on a chain or torque. They can even be worn in the hair or on shoes or bags. With a little bit of imagination they can transform an outfit! This one is made of Galalith (casein) - an early plastic - used around the time that bakelite was popular. It is a lovely green - and has a row of white paste stones across the top and down one side. It is £58 and the reference is 2117 B56/26. See me on Facebook - Gillian Horsup Vintage Jewellery - or look at my web site - find it here for a good selection of vintage costume jewellery and accessories. Or find me at Grays Antiques near Bond Street tube station in central London.

This wonderful glass flowers necklace is probably Czech - made in the Art Deco period. As I can't find these necklaces documented anywhere I can only guess. It is rather wonderful. The blue in the picture is not quite accurate - it is more the muted colour of bluebells. Each glass flower bead has a brass wire embedded in the glass. This forms a loop to thread the beads on. I have never had one with so many beads on it. Price £120. Ref: 2114 B71/14. If you get an opportunity to visit my shop at Grays Antiques in central London, I would love to see you. You can see me on Facebook - gillian horsup vintage jewellery - and my web site is click here to take a look! I always have a good selection of necklaces in the shop. I love this red and black cicada brooch by Lea Stein! I do wear the cicada brooch - sometimes I wear a pair! This is in very strong colours - red and black for the head and black and white for the wings. These are edge in black and red. On the cicada you can easily see the layers of cellulose acetate in different colours that are bonded together to make the stripes. I also counted at least 6 different pieces that had to be put together - in addition to the clasp (which is marked with Lea Stein's name and Paris). The cicada is one of the bigger Lea Stein brooches. Full details on my web site - www.gillianhorsup.com - click here for my website Price £55. Ref: 2113 B77/30. My shop is at Grays Antiques in central London.
A vintage celluloid hair comb. This is quite different from the normal faux tortoishell hair comb - or indeed the Art Deco hair combs with the coloured paste stones. It is a red comb overlaid with black. It has the straight lines of the Art Deco period and the wavy floral lines of the Art Nouveau. The red shows round the edge of the black. The back is entirely red. A great design! Price £75. Ref: 2112 B83/47. www.gillianhorsup.com for more details and my other stock. my website is here What I have on my web site is a very small proportion of the stock in my shop at Grays Antique (The Mews) in central London.

This stunning pendant - possibly from the 1970's - is a glorious shade of yellow - and has a raised small red disk on the front with two black lines running through. It comes with a long gilt chain - but could be worn on a short chain or a torque. Wonderful for the summer- light to wear. Price £85.00 Ref: 2108 B75/12. I am not a tennis enthousiast - but this is a brooch for someone who is! It is Art Deco - possibly on chrome - and depicts a stylish lady in a red and white outfit. She is holding some bunting and there are three balls at the bottom. The colour are in enamel paint. With Wimbledon coming up this would make a wonderful present. Ref: 2103 B81/49. Price £75. See my stock on my web site click here- and see me on Facebook - Gillian Horsup Vintage Jewellery. Visit me at Grays Antiques in central London if you can.

People often ask me if I collect any special items of jewellery. Well yes and no! I like to have an example of things that interest me - often keeping pieces that might have a damage. I like to see how things are made. It is very useful to have these examples so you know what something should look like! Sometimes I wear a piece a couple of times and can then part with it - or even just keep it for a few weeks - then put it into the shop. I love bakelite bangles and do have and wear some of these - I just love the feel of them! I do have a small collection of Czech brooches - probably made by Neiger in the 1920/30's. They are in the Egyptian Revival style and are made of glass and brass (to immitate jade, coral etc.) These are now very difficult to find so I am very glad that I have kept some! There are also Oriental examples of these brooches - and I am quite happy to sell these! The picture is of one of my pieces and I am afraid it is not for sale! However I have some examples of Egyptian Revival in the shop - and on the web site - my website is here - do take a look. You can also see me on Facebook and Twitter.

I love rings and usually have plenty in the shop. I do not sell precious jewellery so these are usually silver or some sort of plastic. I am very fond of bakelite, celluloid, lucite and more modern plastics. I also like 20th century silver rings. Some of the Czech rings with glass stones are particularly beautiful and I always buy them when I can. I do not sell engagement or weddings rings. These are usually gold, platinum and gem stones. Sometimes I sell a token engagement ring - when a young man wants to give a ring as a promise to buy something better together!
For anyone wanting an engagement or wedding ring in the traditional style - this can be bought at Grays Antiques - where I have my shop. For anyone wanting a modern design - can I recommend Atelier - who have a shop in Newark. They have a beautiful selection - and will also make to order - you can even design your own! See their website - their website is here - do take a look!

See my web site for full details - my website is here - and see me on Facebook - Gillian Horsup Vintage Jewellery. I have a shop at Grays Antiques near Bond Street Tube Station in central London.

Description of what marcasite is - on the glossary section of my web site - my website is here - price £145 ref: 2073 B79/38. Or see me at Grays Antiques (Vintage Modes) in central London.

This is a red and black cicada brooch by Lea Stein Paris. (All my Lea Stein have the correct markings on the back). The cicada is my favourite out of all the Lea Stein designs. This one looks very Art Deco in its red and black colourings. The cicada is one of the bigger Lea Stein brooches - being nearly 3 1/2 inches long. It has no glitter - for those who are not keen on it! Ref: 2037 B73/35. Price £55. See my web site - www.gillianhorsup.com and my Facebook page - Gillian Horsup Vintage Jewellery - or come to my shop at Grays Antiques, near Bond Street Tube Station in central London!
